Mining Tags: Check-In and Check-Out
The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has created guidelines for mines to have an effective Check-In / Check-Out system to strengthen safety in mining operations. This process has been put in place to keep track of how many people are underground and who exactly they are. In the event of an emergency, it provides a method to ensure all workers are accounted for and can trigger the deployment of mine rescue teams for missing workers.
Check-In / Check-Out boards for miners have a nail with a brass numbered tag on it. Each worker is assigned a specific number. When they go into the mine, they remove their tag from the board and take it with them. When they exit the mine, they put the tag back on the board. It is important that the tag material is brass, because it is going down into the mine with the miner. Brass is a nonferrous material, meaning it contains no iron. Iron is the element that can cause sparks when hit. Therefore brass, a material that won’t spark, is the safest material to use in mines where a fire would cause devastating damage.

Style #890 Zip – NB&T’s Most Popular Wing Band
Wing Bands are a great identification option for poultry. You can put them on day-old chicks, the band will grow with the bird and stay on them for life. National Band & Tag offers multiple styles of wing bands to meet your needs. But if you aren’t sure which band is best for you, we always recommend the style #890 Zip Wing Band!
The Style #890 Zip is National Band & Tag’s most popular wing band! There are two main reasons as to why our customers love this wing band for their poultry: tamper-resistant and highly customizable.
TAMPER-RESISTANT: This poultry wing band is pre-formed with a strong tamper-resistant seal when sealed with our applicator. As you can see in the picture below, once the band has been sealed, the eyelet is now re-formed. So, if the eyelet is messed with, the band can not be re-used. The permanent seal also keeps the band from falling off the bird with normal wear and tear.
CUSTOMIZATION:
SIZE: We have three different sizes to choose from. The -2.75 (1” / 25.4mm), -3 (1 ¼” / 31.75mm), and -4 (1 ½” / 38.1mm). The size 890-3 is the most widely used size, with size 2.75 being used for smaller birds and size 4 for larger birds.
COLOR: We have multiple colors to choose from in both enamel and fusion colors. You get to pick the top color, but the inside color will vary.
EYELETS: The Style #890 Zip has a separate eyelet piece (compared to the style #892 which is made from a drawn tube of metal to form the eyelet). This allows the #890 to have a customized eyelet piece. Colored Eyelets or Stainless-Steel eyelets are available.
STAMPING VS LASER ETCHING VS FUSION MARKING: Most customers prefer stamped wing bands. Stamping can be done on any color band, with a minimum quantity of 100 bands. Laser etching and fusion marking have limits on band size, colors, and the minimum number of bands that must be ordered. Text and serial numbers are included in the price of the band. Mandy (Human Resources): Style 691IL – My favorite tag is the 691 because I love the fact that our company provides a product that aids in conservation efforts for Sea Turtles across the globe. Mike (Rabies Department Supervisor): Style 165 – The style 165 dog bone tag is my favorite for its size and popularity. It has enough room on it for all the vital information, without being too large for your pet.
Ximena (Bilingual Customer Service Representative): Style 890 – My favorite is the 890 wing band because it was the first one I learned how to enter an order for when I started working here. It is NB&T’s most popular wing band because it is tamper-resistant with an eyelet and customizable.
Chris (Laser Department) Arboretum & Plant Tags – I enjoy tags that require design work. I laser etch a lot of arboretum and plant tags that have a little bit of everything on them like text, logos, and a QR Code. I also like how the black UV stable aluminum looks when laser etched. The white on black creates a nice clean professional look.
Niki (Accounts Receivable): Write On Tags – My favorite is the write-on tags because you can have them on hand for on-site identification of multiple items. They are helpful in case you need to label something right away.
Rob (Shipping): Crematory Tags – We make tags for a lot of different uses, but I think crematory tags are one of the more unique things we make. I like to see different uses for our round tags besides the usual dog tags.
Evelyn (Administrative Assistant): Style 2725 Wrap Around Write-On Tag – It can be applied to a variety of objects and writing on them is simple with any pointed object. The wrap-around feature is nice because it is a built-in attachment that can wrap around and then be adjusted to fit the size of whatever you are tagging.
Tracey (Packing Department): Style 147 – My favorite is the 147 rosette shape because of its shape and size, they fit really easily in our cartons and I can pack them faster. The 147 is also one of the four main rabies styles of the year. It is the recommended shape for 2025 so I will pack a lot of them soon.
Jerry (Paint-Fill Machine Operator): Wire Rope Tags – I like when there is a custom logo on a wire rope tag because of the way it looks when the paint machine fills it with paint. I also like the way turquoise and yellow aluminum look when they have black paint-fill.

Next time you’re in Houston, TX, make sure to stop by and eat at Taste of Texas! Taste of Texas has been our customer for decades, using Style #137 – 1-1/4″ round in plain (silver) aluminum to ID their steaks.
In their restaurant, they have a butcher shop area where you can select your steak. Our aluminum tag with a serial number is pinned into the steak, and the number is written down on the ticket. Now when it goes back to the grill, the number on the ticket and the number on the steak match, so they know exactly what seasoning to use and temperature to grill it to. When the steak comes out to your table, it has that numbered tag still pinned to it, so you know that is the steak that you picked out.

NB&T has been partnering with the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) for 25+ years. Two of our eleven owners, brothers Brad and Fred Haas, always attend the NWTF convention. We asked them, “What is your favorite part about exhibiting at the NWTF convention?”:
Brad Haas: “There are so many people who tell us stories about our bands whether it’s a hunting story, banding birds or tagging critters. It’s always fun talking to the customers at the show who stop by the booth to say hi and talk about how our products are working for them.”
Fred Haas: “My favorite part of the NWTF convention is talking to all the great folks who attend the show and end up stopping at our booth to inquire about all of our tagging solutions. There are lots of experts from every state at the convention to share their knowledge about conservation and wild turkeys.”

2″ Inch Survey Tags
As of January 1, 2024, we have updated our Survey Tag page to include pricing for our Style 93 (2″ inch diameter) “Orange Priced” tag. Our largest survey tag now lists pricing for stamped straight text, stamped radial text, and laser etched straight or radial text and graphics. Tags are available in plain aluminum, colored aluminum, stainless steel, and brass.

Digital Mock-Ups
Here at National Band & Tag, we can assist with basic digital mock-ups of layouts for those who are unable to provide their own. We offer this on tags with complex layouts, to help ensure that everyone is on the same page of how the tag will look. Digital mock-ups are not exactly copies and may slightly vary in sizing, color, and look. We offer one to two major changes on your mock-up design, before an artwork fee may be added on for additional work.
DIGITAL MOCK-UPS OF LASER ETCHED TAGS:
The majority of our digital mock-ups are for laser etched tags as they can be very complex with multiple lines of text, logos, and barcodes. Laser etching can vary how it looks on different materials. Matching the exact color is one of the bigger challenges when creating a digital mock-up. Please see the examples below of how your actual tag may vary from your mock-up.
DIGITAL MOCK-UPS OF STAMPED TAGS:
Stamped tags are difficult to replicate exactly. Our stamped font is a custom font. The closest True-Type font is a Helvetica, so we use that when making stamped tag mock-ups. Since we usually only do mock-ups for tags with complex layouts, we don’t do many stamped ones. Stamped logos and radial text are an exception. As you can see on the examples below, radial text is difficult to do on a mock-up, and will always look better on the actual tag.

Bulk Dog and Cat License Tags
National Band & Tag is a manufacturer of bulk license tags for municipalities. If you are an individual pet owner in need of pet license tag, please call your local city or county clerk to learn more about pet licensing requirements in your area.
For municipalities in need of animal license tags, choose from our 160+ tag shapes and 11 different aluminum colors for your licensing program. Some customers choose the same shape, and a different color every year. Others choose a different tag shape and color every year. You can also have one shape/color for a 1 year license and a different one for a life time license. Or, a neutered vs not neutered pet. There are multiple combination options to choose from. We also offer kennel license tags to go with your pet license tags if needed.

QR Coded Tags – Get Customers To Your Website With One Scan
WHAT IS A QR CODE:
A QR Code or Quick Response Code, is a 2D barcode that typically leads to a website. If it doesn’t lead to a website, then it can lead to a serial number. QR Codes can be scanned with a smart phone or a 2D scanner.
WHAT TAGS CAN HAVE A QR CODE ON THEM:
Almost all our plate tags can have a QR Code laser etched onto them. For QR Codes we recommend the UV Stable Black Aluminum material because the black and white contrast is the best for reading the QR Code with a smartphone. Stainless Steel or Blue Aluminum would be the next best options. Not available on Brass. We also offer Asset Labels where you can design your own QR Coded label.
QR CODE TAG USES:
Any time you want to lead someone to a website, a QR Code is an easy way to get them there. The information on the tag can’t change once it’s made. But you can constantly update the website that the QR Code leads to. If you want to lead someone to a website to learn more about what they are looking at. Or, if you want them to go to a website to sign in and log information about the equipment they are working with. A QR Code can easily get them to the correct place without them having to type in a website name.
Some uses include, but are not limited to: Tree Tags, Asset Tags, Menu Tags, Promotional Tags, Equipment/Tool Tags, etc.
