Utility Pole Tag Case Study | 20 Years of Field Performance
When Utility Pole Tags Need to Last Decades
When a utility company installs identification tags on power poles, they expect those tags to remain readable for decades, not just survive a few seasons. Utility pole tags become part of an asset management system that line crews depend on every day, making long-term readability and reliable barcode scanning essential throughout the life of the pole.
National Band & Tag has been manufacturing custom utility pole tags for power companies for decades. One of those customers, Diverse Power, has trusted our UV Stable Black Aluminum tags for more than twenty years. Headquartered in LaGrange, Georgia, Diverse Power is a member-owned electric cooperative that has provided electric service throughout west-central Georgia and eastern Alabama since 1936.
Following the Same Utility Pole Tags for Nearly 20 Years
One of the advantages of working with long-term customers is seeing how products perform in the real world.
Over the years, we’ve stayed in touch with the Diverse Power team and occasionally asked whether they had any retired utility pole tags they could send back for evaluation. Approximately eleven years after their original order, they removed a tag from a decommissioned utility pole and mailed it to us. A few years later, they sent another sample that had been in service for approximately fourteen years. Most recently, after nearly twenty years had passed, we reached out again, and they sent us another tag that had been mounted on a utility pole for approximately 20 years before being removed during the pole’s decommissioning.
What makes these samples especially valuable is why they were removed. None of the tags had failed. They weren’t replaced because they became unreadable or because the barcode stopped working. Instead, each tag was removed only because the pole itself had reached the end of its service life.

Real-World Performance After 11, 14, and 20 Years
The progression tells a remarkable story. While each tag shows the expected signs of weathering around the mounting holes after years of outdoor exposure, the critical identification information remained intact. The laser-etched numbers were still clearly legible, and every barcode successfully scanned, including the tag that had spent approximately twenty years in the field.
The tags used by Diverse Power measure 1.25″ × 2.75″ and are manufactured from our UV Stable Black Aluminum with two 1/8″ mounting holes. Each tag is laser etched, exposing the bright aluminum beneath the UV-stable black surface to create permanent, high-contrast identification designed for long-term outdoor use.
Why Long-Lasting Utility Pole Tags Matter
For utility companies, appearance is only part of the equation. A successful utility pole identification tag must continue doing its job year after year by providing reliable asset identification for field crews. These samples demonstrate that after approximately 11, 14, and 20 years in service, the tags continued to provide clear identification numbers and fully functional barcodes. Real-world field performance like this helps utilities maintain accurate asset records while reducing the need for replacement tags.
