Utility Pole Tag Case Study | 20 Years of Field Performance

When Utility Pole Tags Need to Last Decades

When a utility company installs identification tags on power poles, they expect those tags to remain readable for decades, not just survive a few seasons. Utility pole tags become part of an asset management system that line crews depend on every day, making long-term readability and reliable barcode scanning essential throughout the life of the pole.

National Band & Tag has been manufacturing custom utility pole tags for power companies for decades. One of those customers, Diverse Power, has trusted our UV Stable Black Aluminum tags for more than twenty years. Headquartered in LaGrange, Georgia, Diverse Power is a member-owned electric cooperative that has provided electric service throughout west-central Georgia and eastern Alabama since 1936.

Following the Same Utility Pole Tags for Nearly 20 Years

One of the advantages of working with long-term customers is seeing how products perform in the real world.

Over the years, we’ve stayed in touch with the Diverse Power team and occasionally asked whether they had any retired utility pole tags they could send back for evaluation. Approximately eleven years after their original order, they removed a tag from a decommissioned utility pole and mailed it to us. A few years later, they sent another sample that had been in service for approximately fourteen years. Most recently, after nearly twenty years had passed, we reached out again, and they sent us another tag that had been mounted on a utility pole for approximately 20 years before being removed during the pole’s decommissioning.

What makes these samples especially valuable is why they were removed. None of the tags had failed. They weren’t replaced because they became unreadable or because the barcode stopped working. Instead, each tag was removed only because the pole itself had reached the end of its service life.

Real-World Performance After 11, 14, and 20 Years

The progression tells a remarkable story. While each tag shows the expected signs of weathering around the mounting holes after years of outdoor exposure, the critical identification information remained intact. The laser-etched numbers were still clearly legible, and every barcode successfully scanned, including the tag that had spent approximately twenty years in the field.

The tags used by Diverse Power measure 1.25″ × 2.75″ and are manufactured from our UV Stable Black Aluminum with two 1/8″ mounting holes. Each tag is laser etched, exposing the bright aluminum beneath the UV-stable black surface to create permanent, high-contrast identification designed for long-term outdoor use.

Why Long-Lasting Utility Pole Tags Matter

For utility companies, appearance is only part of the equation. A successful utility pole identification tag must continue doing its job year after year by providing reliable asset identification for field crews. These samples demonstrate that after approximately 11, 14, and 20 years in service, the tags continued to provide clear identification numbers and fully functional barcodes. Real-world field performance like this helps utilities maintain accurate asset records while reducing the need for replacement tags.

Why Facilities Use Permanent Metal Energy Source Tags

Whether performing routine maintenance, servicing equipment, or following lockout/tagout procedures, employees must be able to quickly identify the correct energy source before work begins. That’s where permanent energy source tags play an important role.

Unlike temporary lockout/tagout tags that are attached during maintenance activities, permanent metal energy source tags remain mounted to equipment year-round. They provide clear, durable identification of electrical disconnects, valves, pneumatic lines, water shutoffs, and other isolation points throughout a facility.

For manufacturing plants, utilities, processing facilities, and other industrial operations, a consistent energy source identification system helps improve organization and makes locating critical isolation points faster and easier.

What Are Energy Source Tags?

Energy source tags are permanent identification tags installed on equipment to identify the location and type of an energy isolation point. Rather than serving as a temporary warning device, these tags provide long-term identification that supports maintenance, inspections, and safety programs.

Facilities often use energy source tags to label:

  • Electrical disconnects
  • Isolation valves
  • Pneumatic shutoffs
  • Water supply valves
  • Gas isolation points
  • Other hazardous energy sources

Many organizations also assign each energy source a unique number or identifier. This allows maintenance personnel to reference the correct isolation point in written procedures, equipment manuals, and maintenance documentation, helping create a consistent identification system throughout the facility.

Common Types of Energy Isolation Points

Industrial equipment can contain multiple hazardous energy sources, each requiring a clearly identified isolation point. Depending on the application, facilities may use permanent metal tags for:

Electrical Energy Isolation Points – Electrical disconnect switches, breaker panels, and power supplies.

Valve Energy Isolation Points – Manual valves used to isolate equipment during servicing.

Water Energy Isolation Points – Water supply shutoff valves for production equipment, cooling systems, or process lines.

Pneumatic Energy Isolation Points – Compressed air valves that must be isolated before maintenance begins.

Flammable Gas Energy Isolation Points – Gas supply shutoffs used with industrial burners, ovens, and processing equipment.

Gravity Energy Isolation Points – Equipment that stores energy through suspended loads, elevated components, or other gravity-related hazards.

Using consistent naming and numbering for these isolation points helps reduce confusion and allows maintenance personnel to quickly locate the correct equipment when following established procedures.

Why Choose Permanent Metal Energy Source Tags?

Energy source tags are often exposed to harsh industrial environments where paper labels or temporary tags may not provide long-term durability. Stainless steel and other metal tags offer a permanent identification solution designed to withstand demanding conditions while helping facilities maintain a consistent identification system.

When every energy isolation point follows the same naming convention and identification format, maintenance personnel can more easily locate equipment, reference written procedures, and document inspections. Standardized numbering also helps reduce confusion when multiple isolation points exist on the same piece of equipment or within the same production area.

Depending on the application, permanent metal energy source tags can provide:

  • Excellent corrosion resistance
  • Long-lasting readability
  • Resistance to moisture and washdown environments
  • Durability in outdoor installations
  • Resistance to oils, chemicals, and industrial cleaning processes
  • A professional, consistent appearance throughout the facility
  • Sequential numbering, equipment IDs, barcodes, or QR codes for improved asset management

Because these tags remain attached to equipment for years, durability and consistency are two of the most important considerations when selecting an identification solution.

Custom Stainless Steel Energy Source Tags

Every facility has different identification requirements. Custom metal energy source tags can be manufactured with the information needed for your maintenance and identification program, including custom text, sequential numbering, equipment identification numbers, barcodes, QR codes, and company logos.

Constructed from durable stainless steel, these permanent tags are designed to provide long-lasting identification for electrical, pneumatic, water, valve, gas, gravity, and other energy isolation points throughout your facility.

Whether you’re implementing a new identification system or replacing worn or outdated tags, National Band & Tag can manufacture custom stainless steel energy source tags tailored to your exact specifications. Contact us today to discuss your application or request a quote, and let our team help you create a durable, long-lasting identification solution for your facility.

How to Prepare for Your Annual Lead Apron Inspection

Lead apron inspections are an important part of maintaining a radiation safety program. Whether you manage a hospital, imaging center, cath lab, surgery department, or physician office, keeping radiation protection apparel properly identified and organized can make annual inspections significantly easier.

Many facilities have dozens or even hundreds of lead aprons, thyroid collars, and other protective garments in service. Without a clear identification and tracking system, inspection records can become difficult to manage and equipment can be challenging to locate when it is time for routine inspections.

By implementing a simple lead apron tracking system, facilities can improve inventory management, maintain accurate inspection records, and streamline future inspections.

Why Lead Apron Inspections Matter

Lead aprons and other radiation protection garments help reduce radiation exposure during medical imaging and interventional procedures. Over time, normal use can cause wear and damage that may impact a garment’s effectiveness. Routine lead apron inspections help identify potential issues and ensure protective garments remain suitable for use.

In addition to supporting radiation safety programs, inspections also help facilities maintain organized documentation. Inspection records may be reviewed during internal audits, accreditation surveys, or other compliance-related activities. Having accurate records tied to each individual garment can save considerable time when information is requested.

One of the most common challenges facilities face is simply keeping track of their inventory. As lead aprons move between departments, imaging rooms, and staff members, it becomes increasingly difficult to know which garment belongs to whom and when it was last inspected. Assigning a unique identification number to each apron creates a foundation for effective lead apron inventory management and compliance tracking.

A well-organized identification system helps ensure inspection records, maintenance history, and garment information remain connected to the correct piece of radiation safety equipment throughout its service life.

How to Organize and Track Your Lead Aprons with Barcodes and QR Codes

The foundation of any effective lead apron tracking system is assigning each garment a unique identification number. Plastic lead apron tags can be customized with sequential numbering alone or with both numbering and a linear barcode or 2D barcode, allowing facilities to choose the level of tracking that best fits their workflow. The identification number can then be linked to information such as department, location, employee assignment, purchase date, inspection history, or other inventory records. If you plan to incorporate barcode scanning into your inspection process, sample tags are available so you can verify compatibility with your barcode readers before placing an order.

Many facilities also use year discs or colored spiral attachments as quick visual indicators during annual lead apron inspections. Tags and spirals can be color coded by inspection year, department, location, or any system that works best for your facility. By combining unique identification numbers, barcodes, color coding, and year markers, facilities can create an organized lead apron inventory system that simplifies recordkeeping and makes future inspections faster and more efficient.

Make Future Inspections Faster and Easier

A standardized lead apron identification system saves time during annual inspections and helps keep inventory organized year after year. With clearly identified garments, staff can quickly locate specific aprons, verify inspection status, and update records with confidence. Color-coded tags, year discs, and barcode or QR code identification further streamline routine inspections while reducing the chance of duplicate records or misplaced equipment.

Whether you’re managing a handful of lead aprons or hundreds across multiple departments, plastic lead apron tags provide a durable, radiolucent solution for inventory management and compliance tracking. What to Do If Your Boat Needs a Replacement HIN Tag

If you own a boat, the Hull Identification Number (HIN) is one of the most important pieces of identification on the vessel. Similar to a VIN on a car, a HIN is a unique number used to identify your boat for registration, insurance, recalls, ownership records, and theft recovery. Federal regulations require boats manufactured after 1972 to have a HIN permanently affixed to the vessel.

Over time, HIN tags can become damaged, painted over, corroded, lost during repairs, or become unreadable from years of outdoor exposure. When that happens, many boat owners start looking for replacement HIN tags and wondering what information is needed to get a new one made.

How Do I Know If I Need a Replacement HIN Tag?

You may need a replacement HIN tag if:

  • The original tag is damaged or unreadable
  • The tag was removed during restoration or repair work
  • Corrosion or fading has made the information difficult to read
  • The boat has been repainted and the HIN was covered up
  • The original tag is missing entirely

Replacing a damaged HIN tag helps ensure your boat can still be properly identified for registration, insurance, and ownership purposes.

Where Can I Find My Boat’s HIN?

In most cases, the Hull Identification Number can be found in two places:

  • On your boat registration paperwork
  • On the upper starboard side of the transom (rear right side of the boat)

Some boats may also have a secondary HIN located inside the vessel in a hidden location for verification purposes.

If your original tag is damaged or unreadable, your registration paperwork is the most important document because it contains the official HIN assigned to your boat.

What If My HIN Tag Is Missing or Unreadable?

If your HIN tag is missing or cannot be read, start by locating your current boat registration.

At National Band & Tag, we require a copy of your current registration paperwork before producing a replacement HIN tag. The registration contains the Hull Identification Number that will be laser etched onto your new tag.

Other documents, photographs, or handwritten numbers are not accepted.

This helps ensure the replacement HIN tag matches the official registration records for your vessel.

If you cannot locate your registration paperwork, contact your state’s boating or registration agency before ordering a replacement tag.

Where Should a Replacement HIN Tag Be Installed?

Federal regulations specify where Hull Identification Numbers should be displayed on a boat. For most vessels, the HIN is located on the upper starboard side of the transom.

When installing a replacement HIN tag:

  • Place it as close as possible to the original location
  • Mount it permanently to the boat
  • Do not attach it to removable parts or accessories
  • Follow any additional state requirements if applicable

Proper placement helps ensure the HIN remains visible and compliant with boating regulations.

Why Is the HIN Important?

A Hull Identification Number helps identify your specific boat and is commonly used for:

  • Boat registration
  • Insurance records
  • Ownership verification
  • Theft recovery
  • Recall tracking
  • Titling and resale purposes

The 12-character HIN contains manufacturer and production information unique to the vessel.

Ordering a Replacement HIN Tag

National Band & Tag manufactures durable replacement HIN tags designed for long-term marine use. Our tags are laser etched for clear readability and outdoor durability.

To order a replacement HIN tag, simply provide your current boat registration paperwork. Once approved, we will laser etch the HIN exactly as it appears on the registration paperwork.

10 Year Outdoor Fade Test Case Study, Enamel Painted Aluminum Tags

How long will painted aluminum tags last outdoors?

It is one of the most common questions we receive from customers who want to use colored aluminum tags outdoors. To help answer that question with real world data, National Band & Tag conducted a long-term outdoor fade test using our enamel painted aluminum material.

We mounted painted aluminum strips on the roof of our facility in Newport, Kentucky and left them exposed to the elements year after year.

Now, after more than 10 years of outdoor exposure, we wanted to share the results.

Test Conditions

The enamel painted aluminum strips were mounted outdoors on the roof of our Newport, KY facility. Newport experiences all four seasons, including:

  • Hot and humid summers
  • Freezing winters
  • Heavy rain
  • Snow and ice
  • Strong UV exposure during summer months
  • Temperature swings throughout the year

This created a realistic long-term environment for evaluating outdoor durability.

To help measure fading, a 3 inch wide board was secured down the center of the strips. The board protected the middle portion of each strip from direct sunlight while the exposed ends remained fully subjected to UV rays and weather exposure.

This allowed us to directly compare protected versus exposed areas on the same piece of material.

10 Year Fade Test Results

After more than a decade outdoors, most colors continued to perform very well with minimal noticeable fading.

However, two colors showed more significant UV breakdown over time.

Red Enamel Painted Aluminum

Red showed the most noticeable fading during the test. Based on our long-term outdoor observations, the red enamel paint maintained good color stability for approximately 5 years before significant fading became noticeable. After extended UV exposure, the exposed areas gradually shifted toward an orange appearance. By year 10, the contrast between the UV protected center section and exposed ends became very noticeable.

Gold Enamel Painted Aluminum

Gold also showed visible fading over time. Based on our observations, the gold enamel paint maintained good appearance for approximately 6 years before more noticeable fading began to occur. While the fading was not as dramatic as the red, the exposed sections became lighter and less vibrant after years of direct outdoor exposure.

Colors That Performed Well After 10 Years

All of the other colors that were tested, Purple, White, Turquoise, Black, Yellow, Orange, Blue, and Green, all had minimal fading.

While all outdoor materials naturally weather over time, these colors demonstrated excellent long-term durability in direct outdoor exposure.

What We Recommend for Long-Term Outdoor Applications

Based on our outdoor testing, most enamel painted aluminum colors, with the exception of red and gold, have demonstrated strong outdoor durability for 10+ years in direct weather exposure.

However, if your application requires maximum long-term color stability with minimal fading, we typically recommend either:

  • Plain Aluminum with stamped characters
  • Black UV Stable Aluminum with laser etched marking

Stamped plain aluminum avoids painted surface fading altogether and remains a popular option for utility pole tags, numbered tree tags, industrial, and outdoor identification applications.

Our Black UV Stable Aluminum is specifically designed for long-term outdoor exposure and has demonstrated durability exceeding 20+ years outdoors. The white laser etched marking on the black background also provides excellent contrast and readability for serial numbers, barcodes, and QR codes.

Real World Testing Continues

The test strips remain outdoors today and the evaluation is ongoing. We believe real world exposure testing provides valuable information that helps customers choose the right material for their environment and expected lifespan.

If you have questions about outdoor tag materials or need help selecting the best option for your application, our team is happy to help.

QR Codes on Metal Tags: Durable Identification for Outdoor and Industrial Use

QR codes have become one of the easiest ways to connect physical products to digital information. With a quick smartphone scan, users can instantly open a website, pull up inventory records, access maintenance information, or identify equipment. While printed QR code labels may work indoors, many businesses need something more permanent. That is why laser etched metal QR code tags continue to grow in popularity for industrial, commercial, and outdoor applications.

What Can a QR Code on a Metal Tag Do?

QR codes can be used in many different ways depending on the application. Some companies use QR codes strictly for asset tracking, while others use them to direct customers or employees to online information.

Common uses include:

  • Opening a webpage
  • Displaying a serial number
  • Accessing maintenance records
  • Linking to inventory systems
  • Viewing tree or plant information
  • Opening digital restaurant menus
  • Connecting to product specifications
  • Pulling up inspection records

One major advantage of QR codes linked to a URL is that the webpage can continue to be updated over time without replacing the physical tag, as long as the web address stays the same.

Popular Uses for QR Code Metal Tags

Asset and Inventory Tracking

QR codes are commonly used on asset tags to help businesses identify and track equipment, tools, and inventory. In many cases, the QR code is laser etched alongside a matching human readable serial number. This allows employees to either scan the code or manually read the identification number when needed.

Popular applications include:

  • Warehouse inventory
  • Manufacturing equipment
  • Rental equipment
  • Tool tracking

Tree Tags and Arboretum Identification

QR coded tree tags have become increasingly popular for parks, campuses, arboretums, and botanical gardens.

Scanning the code can direct visitors to:

  • Tree species information
  • Interactive maps
  • Donor recognition pages
  • Care instructions
  • Educational content

Unlike printed labels, laser etched metal tree tags are designed to remain readable outdoors for years.

QR Code Menus and Public Information

Restaurants, breweries, museums, and public facilities often use QR coded metal signs or tags to provide quick access to information.

These QR codes may link to:

  • Restaurant menus
  • Visitor guides
  • Event information
  • Safety instructions
  • Facility directories

Because the website content can be updated anytime, the physical tag does not need to change when information changes online.

Why Metal Tags Last Longer Than QR Code Labels

Printed QR code labels can work short term, but outdoor and industrial environments are often too harsh for adhesive labels to last. Labels may fade in sunlight, peel from moisture or heat and become unreadable over time.

Laser etched metal tags provide a more permanent solution. The QR code becomes part of the tag itself rather than sitting on top as printed ink or adhesive material.

Frequently Asked Questions About QR Code Metal Tags

Can QR codes be laser etched on metal?
Yes. QR codes can be permanently laser etched onto most of the materials we offer.
For outdoor or harsh environments, we recommend Black UV stable aluminum or stainless steel.
For indoor environments, you can do colored aluminum or plastic.

Do laser etched QR codes work outdoors?

Yes. For outdoor uses we recommend using our UV Stable Black Aluminum. QR Codes on metal tags work outside better and longer than printed labels.

Why is Black UV Stable Aluminum good for QR codes?
Successful QR code scanning depends heavily on contrast. Black UV Stable Aluminum creates a white mark against a black background when laser etched, making the code easier for phones and scanners to read quickly.

This high contrast appearance helps improve scan reliability in both indoor and outdoor environments.

Benefits of Black UV Stable Aluminum QR code tags include:

  • High contrast for easier smartphone scanning
  • Excellent outdoor UV resistance
  • Durable anodized finish
  • Lightweight but long lasting
  • Professional appearance
  • Resistant to fading and weather exposure

For many applications, Black UV Stable Aluminum offers the best balance of durability, readability, and cost.

Can a QR code link to a website?

Yes. Many QR codes are designed to open a website, landing page, menu, inventory system, or database record.

You will need to send us your website URL and then we will form it into the QR Code. Learn more about how to send us your data here.

Why include a serial number next to the QR code?

Human readable numbers provide backup identification if scanning is not possible and makes visual identification faster for employees.

How Colleges and Arboretums Use Tree Tags to Create Walking Maps

Across college campuses and arboretums, tree identification tags are used to create educational walking tours that help visitors explore and learn about the landscape. By labeling trees and connecting them to maps or digital resources, these tags turn everyday spaces into interactive experiences. From simple printed maps to fully integrated systems, these programs all start the same way: with clearly labeled trees that visitors can follow and learn from.

Below are three common ways organizations build their arboretum walking trails.

Basic Walking Maps and Brochures

The most common starting point is a simple, self-guided walking tour.

Trees are labeled with arboretum tags that are numbered or identify the species, and visitors follow a printed or downloadable map that corresponds to each tree.

At Lewis-Clark State College, this approach is used to guide visitors through a campus tree tour using a brochure and tagged trees along the route. The map uses numbered locations, while the tags themselves display the tree’s common name for easy identification.

This method is:

  • Easy to set up
  • Cost-effective
  • A great foundation for future expansion

QR Code Tree Tags for Interactive Learning

Instead of relying only on a map, visitors can scan a tag to access additional information right from their phone. QR codes can link to any URL, giving organizations flexibility in how they share content.

A larger-scale example can be seen at the Bonita Lakes Arboretum, developed in partnership with Mississippi State University. Along the trail, over 85 species are tagged, and QR codes direct visitors to a comprehensive tree guide PDF, allowing them to learn more about the trees in the region as they walk.

QR code systems allow organizations to:

  • Share more information without overcrowding the tag
  • Link to resources like webpages, videos, or PDFs
  • Update content anytime without replacing tags
  • Create a more engaging visitor experience

Interactive Maps and Digital Tree Tours

Some colleges and arboretums take their programs even further by developing interactive maps and digital platforms.

At North Carolina State University, a campus tree trail maps over 100 species using digital tools that allow users to explore trees by location.

Each tree is identified with a tag that includes key information such as the common name, scientific name, family, and a campus tree trail URL. Visitors can use this URL to access the digital tree map and explore additional details about each tree.

These systems often work alongside QR codes or direct web links, creating a fully connected experience where:

  • The tag identifies the tree
  • The map shows its location
  • The digital platform provides in-depth information

Deer Identification Tags for Farms and Breeders

How to Track, Manage, and Identify Your Herd

Managing deer on a farm or breeding operation comes with one big challenge, keeping track of individual animals.

Whether you are raising whitetail deer for breeding, operating a hunting preserve, or managing a growing herd, having a reliable identification system is essential. That is where deer identification tags come in.

Why Deer ID Tags Matter

Deer identification tags help you keep track of individual animals, organize breeding records, and make daily management easier. Whether you are identifying deer by number, grouping bloodlines, or maintaining detailed herd records, the right tag can save time and reduce confusion. They can also be used for health and vaccination tracking, breeding record organization, and ownership identification. When your identification system is clear and consistent, everyday tasks become much easier.

Deer Identification Tags from National Band & Tag

At National Band & Tag, we offer both plastic and metal custom deer ID tags.

Flex-Lok Plastic Ear Tags

Flex-Lok Plastic Tags are a popular choice for straightforward identification. They have large, easy-to-read numbers that assist with quick identification in the field. These tags are ideal when you need a simple, reliable system for tracking individual deer.

Allflex and Perma-Flex Plastic Ear Tags with Expanded Customization

For operations that need more detailed identification, Allflex Plastic Ear Tags and Perma-Flex Ear Tags are available with additional size and customization options.

These are best for:

  • adding text, logos, or barcodes
  • more detailed identification systems
  • larger operations with specific tracking needs

They allow you to build a tagging system that fits how your herd is managed.

Metal Ear Tags

Metal ear tags are often a more economical option compared to plastic tags, making them a cost-effective choice for farms that need durable, permenant identification that will last in harsh outdoor environments.

Custom Deer ID Tags Built for Your Operation

Every deer farm operates a little differently. This is why National Band & Tag offers multiple tagging options to meet your needs.

If you are looking for deer identification tags for your farm or breeding operation, National Band & Tag can help. Our team will work with you to choose the right material, layout, and customization options based on how you manage your deer.

Winter Greenhouse: Elevating the Display Garden Experience with Professional Plant Signage

Our customer – Winter Greenhouse – was featured in the June 2025 issue of Green Profit magazine in an article highlighting effective display gardens. The feature showcases how intentional layout, themed garden spaces, and clear plant identification signage work together to enhance both the customer experience and overall business growth.

In the article, Kelly Larsen (Manager) talk about how the display gardens inspire customers:

“Many customers walk through the display gardens before they go shopping,” Kelly said. “It sets a mood because of the beauty and quiet, and customers enjoy touring it.”  “Many of the gardens have a theme, which helps consumers narrow down ideas for their space. Walking paths allow visitors to explore each area, while signage identifies each plant.”

The plant identification plays an important role in the overall experience. Clear, durable garden center plant labels not only enhance the visual appeal of a display — they improve navigation, education, and purchasing confidence. When visitors can easily identify plant varieties, they are more likely to envision those selections in their own landscapes.

Winter Greenhouse utilizes National Band & Tag’s Style #14PLANT Tags throughout their display spaces. These outdoor plant identification tags are built for long-term durability and legibility, maintaining a clean, professional appearance through changing seasons. Designed specifically for nurseries, garden centers, and public display gardens, they provide reliable performance in demanding outdoor environments.

In the article, Jim Wilson (Owner) also highlights how impactful well-executed display gardens can be for business:

“Much of our initial business came from people visiting the gardens and saying, ‘This is such a wonderful display. Can you do this at my place?’” Jim added. “It’s a wonderful way to mix the landscaping and retail business.”

A well-maintained and clearly identified display garden does more than inspire — it builds credibility. Professional nursery signage and consistent plant labeling reinforce expertise, encourage customer engagement, and support both retail and landscaping services.

We’re proud to support Winter Greenhouse with durable plant labeling solutions that help bring their display gardens to life. If your nursery or garden center is looking to upgrade its plant tags or improve long-term outdoor identification, our Style #14PLANT Tags are built to deliver lasting clarity with a polished, professional finish.

Stormwater Tree Tags for MS4 Compliance

Stormwater tree tags help municipalities track, manage, and document trees as part of MS4 compliance programs. They improve recordkeeping, support inspections, and connect physical assets to digital systems.

Municipalities required to comply with MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) permits must carefully document and manage stormwater infrastructure to reduce pollutants entering local waterways. A strong stormwater program includes not just planning and construction, but clear identification of stormwater assets — including green infrastructure such as trees planted to intercept and absorb runoff.

One simple but effective way to support those efforts is through durable stormwater tree tags. These tags make trees part of your documented stormwater system, help track maintenance, and enhance communication with the public.

How Do Tree Tags Support MS4 Compliance?

Trees planted as part of stormwater management — along rain gardens, detention basins, or buffer strips — are more than landscaping. They provide critical runoff reduction and water quality benefits. Tagging those trees:

  • Associates each tree with your stormwater asset inventory and maintenance records.
  • Makes it easier to demonstrate compliance with your MS4 permit during inspections.
  • Supports community engagement by showing residents how stormwater efforts benefit local waterways.

Scanning a QR code on a tree tag can also allow field staff or the public to report issues such as storm damage, disease, or vandalism directly to your stormwater team.

Custom Tree Tags from National Band & Tag

National Band & Tag offers custom tree tags that are ideal for stormwater programs. All tree tags are made in the USA and built for long-term outdoor use, with options from stamped serial numbers to laser-etched QR codes.

What information can be included on a stormwater tree tag?

With custom tree tags you can: Add your municipality’s name, an asset ID, planting date, or other important text. Incorporate a QR code that directs people to your stormwater website or an issue-reporting form so residents and crews can easily communicate problems or observations. Integrate asset data into GIS or maintenance systems by matching tag numbers to digital records for inspections and reporting.

Whether you’re tracking street trees that contribute to stormwater control, marking bioswale plantings, or identifying trees in a community forest, custom tags bring clarity and durability to your MS4 documentation.

What material is best for outdoor tree tags used in stormwater programs?

National Band & Tag’s tree tags are made from outdoor-ready materials. We always recommend our UV Stable Black Aluminum material because it holds up to years of sun, rain, and seasonal conditions without fading or corrosion.

A Practical Step for Stronger Stormwater Programs

Clear identification helps connect your on-the-ground stormwater tree plantings to broader asset management practices and community engagement. Custom tags make each tree a measurable part of your MS4 strategy, improve public visibility, and help streamline reporting and compliance documentation.

Good tagging practices are a small investment that supports long-term maintenance, monitoring, and public outreach — all important pieces of a successful municipal stormwater program.

Whether you need simple numbered tags or more complex tags with logos and QR codes linking to online stormwater resources or reporting tools, National Band & Tag can tailor your order to your program’s needs. Visit https://www.nationalband.com/tree-tags/ to explore styles and request a quote.

Simplify Asset Management with Vinyl Snap-Off Tags

When it comes to efficiently tracking and managing assets, businesses need easy-to-use identification solutions. National Band & Tag’s Vinyl Snap-Off Tags offer a practical and cost-effective way to label and organize equipment, tools, inventory, and more.

What Are Vinyl Snap-Off Tags?

Our Vinyl Snap-Off Tags are made from durable vinyl, making them ideal for indoor and outdoor applications. These tags come on a perforated strip allowing tags to be quickly snapped off the strip of tags as needed. These tags can be laser etched with a barcode and human readable number or be blank.

Why Choose Vinyl Snap-Off Tags?

  • Customizable: Available in 4 different colors for color coordination of different assets.
  • Efficient Tracking: The snap-off portion enables quick application, and a barcodes helps with data collection and record-keeping.
  • Flexible Formats: Available in sheets of 10 or on a continuous roll to fit your workflow.
  • Versatile Applications: Used across various industries, including manufacturing, utilities, and warehouse management.

Case Study

A great example of these tags in action is a customer in the sporting apparel industry needed a tag to track inventory from their warehouse to their retail stores all across the country. They needed something heavy duty to stand up to harsh conditions, but still flexible, and that could easily be attached or removed. This customer also wanted to go paperless, so they needed a barcode to scan.

The solution that NB&T came up with for this company was to use our Vinyl Snap Off Tags (Style 144V). These tags are made of vinyl, so they are sturdier than a paper label, but are thin and flexible enough that the customer can staple them to wood pallets. They are also laser etched with a linear bar code, so when scanned, it shows how much inventory should be on that wood pallet, along with which retail store location it is being shipped to. The pallet is scanned at the warehouse and then scanned again at the store to make sure no inventory was lost in transit.

Case Study: How National Band & Tag Helped Union Pacific Railroad Streamline Their Asset Tagging System

The Challenge

Union Pacific Railroad, a leading transportation company in North America, relies on a vast network of railways, locomotives, and infrastructure to keep goods moving across the country. With thousands of assets spread across their system, efficient tracking and identification are critical. Years ago, when Union Pacific transitioned to an SAP software system, they faced a challenge: standardizing their asset tags across multiple engineering firms responsible for maintaining and ordering tags for their equipment. Without a unified tagging system, inconsistencies in tag design, formatting, and data could create confusion, slow down operations, and impact efficiency.

The Solution

Union Pacific turned to National Band & Tag to develop a streamlined asset tagging solution that would integrate seamlessly into their new system. Our team worked closely with Union Pacific to create a customized ordering template that ensures every tag meets their specific requirements, regardless of which engineering company places the order.

Key Features of the Solution:

  • Standardized Tag Design – A consistent look and format for all Union Pacific tags, reducing errors and improving readability.
  • Easy-to-Use Ordering Template – Engineering companies can quickly and accurately order tags using a pre-set template designed to match Union Pacific’s specifications.
  • Durable and Long-Lasting Materials – High-quality metal tags built to withstand the harsh conditions of railroad environments.
  • Seamless SAP Integration – The tags and ordering process were designed to align with Union Pacific’s SAP system for better asset management.

Since implementing this standardized tagging system, Union Pacific’s asset management has become more efficient. Even though Union Pacific no longer orders tags directly, their engineering firms can seamlessly place orders while ensuring uniformity across all tags. This solution has helped:

✔ Maintain a consistent appearance across all asset tags.
✔ Improve traceability and organization of railroad assets.
✔ Reduce errors and confusion caused by inconsistent tag designs.
✔ Streamline the ordering process for engineering firms.

Union Pacific’s success story demonstrates how a well-designed tagging system can simplify operations and improve efficiency. National Band & Tag takes pride in creating customized solutions that help businesses, large and small, manage their assets effectively.

If your company is looking for a durable and standardized tagging solution, contact us today to see how we can help!

Screen Printing on Aluminum VS Inverted Text & Logos on Black UV Stable Aluminum

What is Screen Printing and It’s Challenges:

Screen printing, also known as silk screening, is a technique used to apply designs onto various surfaces, including aluminum. This method involves creating a stencil (or screen) and using it to apply layers of ink on the metal surface. It’s widely used for producing metal tags, nameplates, and labels with detailed graphics. The printed ink sits atop the metal surface, which can be susceptible to wear, scratching, and fading over time, especially in harsh environments. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can cause the colors to fade, making it less suitable for outdoor applications without additional protective measures. The initial setup for screen printing can be time-consuming and may incur higher costs, particularly for small batches.

National Band & Tag’s Alternative: Inverted Logos on Black UV Stable Aluminum

At National Band & Tag, we offer an alternative to traditional screen printing by utilizing inverted logos on black UV stable aluminum. This process involves laser etching the black top away, leaving just the text or logo behind in black. What is laser etched away is now silver.

Laser etching creates a permanent mark that is resistant to wear, scratching, and fading, ensuring longevity even in demanding environments. The UV stable anodized aluminum is designed to withstand prolonged exposure to sunlight and harsh weather conditions without degrading. The contrast between the black surface and the silver etched design results in clear and easily readable tags, suitable for various applications. Laser etching eliminates the need for inks and chemicals, making it a more environmentally friendly option compared to screen printing.

By choosing this method, you can achieve the classic black text on a silver background aesthetic, with the added benefits of durability and resistance to environmental factors.

See more examples of laser etching on Black UV Stable Aluminum tags here.

Unlock the Power of Asset Tags with National Band & Tag

What Are Asset Tags and Why Are They Important?

Asset tags are identification tags used to monitor and manage physical assets, ranging from equipment to material and vehicles. These tags are crucial for tracking and maintaining an accurate inventory, ensuring operational efficiency, and preventing loss or theft. By attaching these tags to important equipment, businesses can maintain an accurate inventory, streamline asset management processes, and reduce the time spent searching for misplaced items. Asset tags help deter theft and unauthorized use of assets. By tagging valuable items with unique identification numbers, businesses can quickly identify missing items and take appropriate action to recover them. Additionally, asset tags facilitate the tracking of maintenance schedules and lifecycle information. This ensures that equipment is serviced regularly, prolonging its lifespan and reducing the risk of unexpected failures. Many industries are subject to regulatory requirements that mandate the tracking and management of assets. Asset tags help businesses comply with these regulations by providing a reliable method for recording and reporting asset information.

Mining Tags: Check-In and Check-Out

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has created guidelines for mines to have an effective Check-In / Check-Out system to strengthen safety in mining operations. This process has been put in place to keep track of how many people are underground and who exactly they are. In the event of an emergency, it provides a method to ensure all workers are accounted for and can trigger the deployment of mine rescue teams for missing workers.

Check-In / Check-Out boards for miners have a nail with a brass numbered tag on it. Each worker is assigned a specific number. When they go into the mine, they remove their tag from the board and take it with them. When they exit the mine, they put the tag back on the board. It is important that the tag material is brass, because it is going down into the mine with the miner. Brass is a nonferrous material, meaning it contains no iron. Iron is the element that can cause sparks when hit. Therefore brass, a material that won’t spark, is the safest material to use in mines where a fire would cause devastating damage.

National Band & Tag is here to help with all your brass tag needs. We have multiple sizes of tags that can all be made in brass material and numbered. If you need something in a hurry, we also offer a quick ship option through Amazon. Style #137 (1-1/4″ round) with numbering options of 001-1000.

WHAT ARE WRAP-AROUND TAGS?

Military spec wrap around tags, wire markers, and cable ties are essential components used in organizing and identifying wiring systems across various sectors of the military, including aviation, naval ships, ground vehicles, and communication systems. In aviation, for example, wrap around tags help manage the extensive networks of wiring within aircraft, ensuring that each cable route is clearly identified for maintenance and safety checks. On naval ships, these tags and ties provide long-lasting identification and organization of wiring in tight compartments. Ground vehicles use these markers and ties to streamline the maintenance of electronic and power systems, crucial for operational readiness and swift repairs in field conditions.

Our military-spec tags are crafted to exact size, shape, and material standards to ensure they meet the rigorous demands of military applications. Our Wrap Around Tags are quick and easy to apply. The wrap-around design allows for secure attachment and quick identification without the need for additional tools or adhesives.
