Flag of Tags

While tags are meant for identification, they can also be used for art! We decorated our office with an American Flag made entirely out of tags with adhesive backing. Some of our customers use our tags as keychains, or for crafts with kids, and more.

Our flag of tags is made red, white and blue aluminum material. The rectangles our style 14 tags are 1-1/4” x 4-7/8”. The stars are our style 363.

To help get you ready for 4th of July tomorrow, here are some fun facts about the American flag.

  • Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the American flag on June 14, 1777.
  • For a while, the U.S. added stripes and stars to the flag when welcoming new states. At one point, the flag has 15 stripes and 15 stars. As the country continued to add new states, they decided to go back to the 13 stripes for the original 13 colonies.
  • The colors of the flag have important meanings. Red symbolizes hardiness and valor, white symbolizes purity and innocence and blue represents vigilance, perseverance, and justice.
  • When the flag can no longer be repaired or used, it must be destroyed in a dignified matter, such as burning.

National Band & Tag will be closed tomorrow, Wednesday, for 4th of July. Business will resume on Thursday July 5th.

Tongue & Slot Tags for Electrical Wire Harnesses

What do automobiles, construction machinery, and aircraft have in common? They all have lots of wires inside of them! These wires and cables are all bound together into a wire harness. The cables are bound together by straps, cable ties, electrical tape, conduit, etc., to keep all the wires together in an easy to handle bundle. Wire harnesses make installation of them easier, as well as optimize space. To make sure that you have the correct wires in the harness, or that the harness is correctly put into place, proper identification is key. National Band & Tag’s tongue and slot style tags are perfect for wire harnesses because they come in multiples sizes, and can be customized with your information.

National American Eagle Day

June 20th is National American Eagle Day! This day is used to commemorate the anniversary of the Bald Eagle being selected as our National Symbol, to celebrate its physical recovery to America’s skies, and to observe the American values, ideals, and attributes for which it stands.

On June 20, 1782, the Bald Eagle was selected as the U.S.A.’s National Emblem, and in 1995, the American Eagle Foundation was able to get President Bill Clinton to recognize the first American Eagle Day.

Bald Eagles almost went extinct in the 1960’s due to loss of habitat, but they were brought off the endangered species list in 2007 due to the work of conservationists and strict protection laws. To better learn about eagles and to conserve them is where National Band & Tag comes in with our aluminum Lock-On Leg Bands and Rivet Leg Bands. These custom stamped and numbered leg bands help researchers and conservationist track eagles and learn more about them.

Aluminum Lock-On Bands have a tab that folds over and can be sealed using pliers while the Rivet Band uses pop rivets and a pop rivet gun to seal the rivet band around the bird’s leg. These unique features make these bands great for eagles and other birds of prey.

Bald Eagle: Size 8A or 9
Golden Eagle: Size 9, 9A or 9C

(These sizes are recommended from the USGS Bird Banding Laboratory and should only be used as a guide. NB&T is not responsible for incorrect sizes being ordered based on these recommendations.)

June is National Dairy Month

Before June was National Dairy Month, it started in 1937 by grocery organizations sponsoring “National Milk Month.” By 1939, June became the official “Dairy Month” as a way to distribute more milk during the warm summer months. This month is also used to encourage families to make milk their beverage of choice, and drink more milk for its nutritious benefits.

National Band & Tag provides metal ear tags for dairy farms, dairy associations, DHIA (Dairy Herd Information Associations), dairy cow veterinarians, and genetic companies to I.D. all their dairy cows.

Crematory Tags:

COMPANY TYPES: Crematoriums, Mortuaries, Funeral Homes, Pet Cremations

USE: 304 Stainless Steel stamped tags are used to identify both human and pet remains as they go through the cremation process to ensure proper identification at all times. 304 Stainless Steel tags will not melt in the crematorium, so they are able to go in the fire and stay with the remains.

Tree Tags:

COMPANY TYPES: Landscape Architecture Firms, Plant Ecologist, U.S. Forest Service, Tree and Lawn Care Services, Lumber Production Companies, Arborist Consultants, Tree & Stump Removal, Arborist/Forestry Supply Stores

USE: There are many types of tree tags available, but a stamped #137 is popular for the above companies because their main goal is to number and identify specific trees. The trees could be numbered for a multitude of reasons, from labeling diseased trees, trees to cut down or save, trees to trim and more. A plain aluminum 137 is durable enough to last outside, while also being discreetly visible on the tree.

Dog & Cat Tags:

COMPANY TYPES: Veterinarians, Municipalities, Cities, Counties, Humane Societies, Animal Shelters, Kennels, Animal Hospitals, and Clinics.

USE: Rabies Tags indicate that an animal has had its rabies vaccine. Cities and counties use License Tags to show that your pet has been licensed in that area. General dog and cat I.D. tags are used by animal shelters, humane societies, SPCA’s, etc. to I.D. the animals in that company’s care.

Survey Tags:

COMPANY TYPES: Surveying Companies, Survey and Mapping Equipment Suppliers,

USE: These tags have a hole in the middle for a nail to go through so that it can be attached to the ground, trees, and other objects for surveying and mapping points of land. Usually the surveyor’s license number is stamped on the tag.

Pole Tags:

COMPANY TYPES: Power Pole Inspection Companies, Utility Companies, Wood Pole Manufacturers

USE: Pole Tags are used on power poles, telecommunication poles, and other wood poles to identify that they have been inspected. Pole Tags can range round a small, simple stamped tag with the year on it, to a large barcoded tag that makes inspection easier by scanning the barcode.

Valve & Pipe Tags:

COMPANY TYPES: Chemical, Petroleum, Gas, Utility Companies

USE: Valve & Pipe Tags identify the flow of what is inside the pipes and relay important information and identification at the point of need. These tags are help reduce pipe related accidents and pass safety inspections. The #137 is popular for this because it is a visible size, but not in the way, and can dangle off the valve.

World Landscape Architecture Month

April is World Landscape Architecture Month, a month-long celebration of landscape architecture and design in both public and private spaces. Established by the American Society of Landscape Architecture, WLAM aims to demonstrate how landscape architecture affects our daily lives.

Landscape architects analyze, plan, design, manage, and nurture the built and natural environments. You may see landscape architecture at parks, college campuses, streetscapes, walking trails, plazas, and more.

National Band & Tag creates custom metal tags that landscape architects can use to identify their projects. These metal tags can be customized with the company or designer’s name, information, website, date, etc. and then placed somewhere in the landscape, such as on a tree or rock. This is a great way to help promote and identify your work. Our black UV stable tags are great for outdoors and will last 20+ years, even in harsh environments. The white text on black background provides a high contrast that is visible and easy to read.

The Easter Bunny has an Earring?

Did you know that we manufacture rabbit ear tags? These ear tags are used on rabbits for different research, breeding and conservation purposes. NB&T offers a few different types of ear tags for rabbits, two of our most popular styles are a thin metal tag with an aluminum or plastic washer (style #1841), or a self-piercing ear tag (style 893). Other styles include the style 1005-1 for small rabbits, or the 1005-3 and 1005-4 for larger rabbits. Your tag style and material may vary depending on the species and environments the rabbits are in.

An alternative method for tagging rabbits in the ear, or any large eared animal. is accomplished by first folding the ear in half. Next, locate the piercing point of the tag, half of the tag’s length, down on the folded ear, allowing the other half of the tag length to remain clear. Now pierce through both halves of the ear with a single squeeze of the applicator. This will result in two incisions in the ear. Simply pull the ear back up and the tag will now be located securely in the center of the ear with the number facing out at all times.

National Band & Tag will be closed on Friday, March 30th, for Good Friday. Business will resume on Monday April 2nd.

Why Food Traceability in the Supply Chain is Important

When you’re sitting down to eat dinner, do you ever wonder if your food is safe to eat? The CDC estimates that each year, roughly 48 million people get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000 die from foodborne diseases. Food traceability is becoming even more important so outbreaks can be tracked down faster and more efficiently from fork to farm.

National Band & Tag helps keep food safe with proper identification to make traceability easier. For the first part of the food production chain, we offer ear tags for livestock while they are on the farm. For the processing and distribution part of the supply chain, we off stainless-steel barcoded tags that are safe for use on machines, equipment, pallets, and more.

Plastic Cattle Ear Tag

Metal Cattle Ear Tag

Identification and barcodes allow the CDC to track when people get sick, what store they bought the food from, what distributor and processor the store got the meat from, and what farm it all originated from. This then allows the CDC to determine where the outbreak started, and create recalls, thus stopping more people from getting sick.

Laser Etched Logo Samples on Aluminum Tags

Laser Etching is the process where material is physically etched with the laser beam into the surface of the material, deep enough that you can feel it with your finger nail. On anodized and colored aluminum, the metal with change color from the base color to white, thus providing a high contrast character.

Below are examples of all our colored aluminum, brass, and stainless steel material, and what laser etching will look like on each material. As you can see, different shades of gray are available to create a custom, one of a kind looking tag.

You can browse through our website to see more examples of logos and graphics laser etched on our metal tags. For more information on submitting the correct file type for your logo, click here.

Federal Replica Bird Band Report

replica bird bands

Replica Bird Bands

Did you know, National Band & Tag manufactures federal bird bands used by the North American Bird Banding Program? The banding program is jointly administered by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Canadian Wildlife Service. They are headquartered at the Bird Banding Laboratory located at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Maryland. Every year, the Bird Banding Laboratory receives about 1.2 million banding records from Master Banders, and 87,000 encounter records from hunters and researchers.

After you have encountered a banded bird, you can report the band number online to the USGS. They will then send you a Certificate of Appreciation with your name on it, information about the bird, where it was banded and where you encountered it.

Reporting this information is important because the USGS will then relay the data back to the original bander for their research. Research can range from population, migration patterns, harvest rates, species health and more.

National Band & Tag has the approval from the Bird Banding Program to manufacture federal Replica Bands for those with a Certificate of Appreciation. These are exact replicas of the original federal band that you found on the bird. Authentic federal bird bands cannot be replicated by anyone else except National Band & Tag. Replica Bands are popular for groups of people who aren’t sure who shot the banded bird, for those who lost the original band, or for hunters who want the original band on their mount and a replica for their lanyard.

We looked at Replica Band orders from 12/1/13 – 12/31/2017 and collected data from the Certificates of Appreciation to see what species, sex, age, etc. the birds are that we make the most Replica Bands for. Below are our findings.
